However, the program is undergoing some changes that will very soon result in a reduction in the amount of credit homeowners receive, as well as a reduction in the overall savings generated by solar energy.

* What does NEM 3.0 mean for you?

This policy affects customers of the three investor-owned utilities in CA: Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E), and Southern California Edison (SCE).
NEM 3.0 reduces the value of net metering solar credits by ~75%. This means any excess energy your system generates and sends to the grid will save you less money on your electricity bills – a key aspect of long-term solar savings.
NEM 3.0 will increase the average payback period. Under current net metering policies (NEM 2.0), for most homeowners in CA the cost of installing solar is completely offset by what they save on electricity in 5-6 years (called the payback period). Under NEM 3.0, the payback period will be 9-10 years.
You have until April 14th to go solar under NEM 2.0 (and maximize your savings for the next 20 years). NEM 3.0 begins April 15th of this year, but by working with an installer to submit a finalized application to your utility company by April 14th, you lock in today’s higher net metering rates for the next 20 years.
You have three years to install your solar system and retain your NEM 2.0 eligibility. While your complete application must be submitted by April 14th, you don’t have to rush your installation. As long as your panels go up within three years, you’ll be grandfathered into NEM 2.0.
